PrestaShop

to

Shopify

For years PrestaShop was the natural choice for ecommerce in Italy. The problem comes with updates: modules tied to the version, themes to redo, and a version jump that looks a lot like rebuilding the shop from scratch.

If you have to rebuild it anyway, it’s worth choosing where.

WHEN IT’S TIME

VERSION

You’re stuck on 1.6, or on a 1.7 that was never updated. Moving to the next version means redoing the theme and modules: it’s already a replatforming, just on the same platform.

MODULES

Every feature is a module bought on the marketplace and tied to a version. Some of them nobody updates any more.

OVERRIDES

Over the years someone modified the core or used overrides. Nobody remembers where any more, and every update breaks them.

HOSTING

As with any self-hosted platform, security, backups and performance are on you.

WHAT WE BRING ACROSS

Prestashop

Shopify

What we do

Products with combinations

Products with variants

What we do: We rethink combinations with many attributes, within Shopify’s option limit.

Product features

Metafields and filters

What we do: They become structured data, usable in the catalogue filters.

Nested categories

Collections and menus

What we do: We rebuild the navigation starting from how customers use it.

Multilingual shop

Shopify Markets and translations

What we do: Languages and markets configured together, with URLs per language.

Customer groups and specific prices

B2B catalogues, discounts, customer tags

What we do: We choose the tool based on the real pricing logic [B2B catalogues where the plan includes them].

Customers and order history

Customers and historical orders

What we do: Passwords can’t be transferred: we plan the account reactivation.

CMS pages

Pages and metaobjects

What we do: Structured content becomes metaobjects your team can edit.

URLs with numeric IDs and .html

Fixed /products/ and /collections/ URLs

What we do: 301 redirects mapped one by one, IDs included, language by language.

The case: Elio e le Storie Tese

Elio e le Storie Tese had two separate platforms: the site on ProcessWire and the shop on PrestaShop. We merged them into a single Shopify site.

We migrated over two thousand pages through metaobjects, built an encyclopaedia-style content model of the band and integrated GLS shipping. There’s also a members’ area for paid music lessons taught by the musicians.

The takeaway for anyone on PrestaShop: a separate shop and site can become a single platform.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • It depends on how customised the shop is and how much it costs you to maintain. If the update means redoing the theme and modules anyway, the comparison has to be made on equal work. We tell you after the analysis, even when the answer is to stay.

  • Yes. Languages, translations and per-language URLs are migrated and configured on Shopify. We map the redirects language by language.

  • For most features there’s a native equivalent or an app. For the rest we assess whether it’s really needed or whether it was a way round a PrestaShop limitation.
